Do-it-yourself Frozen Dog Treats

Add the white fibrous flesh of the rind to it for internal cooling! But don’t give it to them without blending it first, it may be hard to digest  large pieces,

Watermelon Slushies

This hydrating and refreshing slushie is a fantastic way to keep your dog cool and content during the hot summer months. Watermelon is low in calories and high in water content, making it a healthy and revitalizing treat.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups seedless watermelon, cubed

  • 1/2 cup coconut water

Instructions:

  • In a blender, combine the watermelon and coconut water.

  • Blend until smooth and slushy.

  • Pour the mixture into a shallow container or ice cube trays.

  • Freeze for at least 2 hours or until firm.

  • Scoop out the slush and serve in a bowl to your canine companion.

Frozen Sweet Potato Treats

These vibrant, frozen treats are not only visually appealing but also packed with nutrients. Sweet potatoes are a great source of dietary fiber and vitamins, while plain Greek yogurt provides protein and probiotics.

Ingredients:

  • 1 large sweet potato, cooked and mashed

  • 1 cup plain Greek yogurt

  • 1/4 cup water

Instructions:

  • In a blender, combine the cooked and mashed sweet potato with the water until smooth.

  • In a separate bowl, mix the sweet potato puree with the Greek yogurt until well combined.

  • Spoon the mixture into a piping bag or a plastic bag with a corner snipped off.

  • Pipe the mixture into swirls or desired shapes onto a parchment-lined baking sheet.

  • Freeze for at least 4 hours or until solid.

  • Carefully peel the sweet potato swirls from the parchment paper and serve as a delightful frozen treat for your pup.

Find It is a wonderful inside game to keep your dog’s mind engaged. Great for any inclement weather. The rules are simple: Ask you dog to sit and stay, then hide treats in a variety of spots. Once hidden, say Find It and set them loose!

During the hot months it can be tempting to take your dogs to the lake to cool down. Currently Town Lake (Ladybird lake) is experiencing an explosion of blue/green algae which is toxic to dogs. This means the lake, Red Bud, Barking Springs, these should all be off limits. Alternatives include: Cedar Bark Park which has a large pond that they clean twice monthly; Auditorium Shores which has a dog shower next to the entrance alongside the dog water fountains to help keep your dog cool; and Turkey Creek has running water thanks to consistent summer rain.

Lend us your little one and they will be the star of a puppy-focused training video.
